Naked Broadband in New Zealand

Ooooer missus! Naked Broadband?!

Sounds a little bit risque... but in reality, it is nothing of the sort. it's just a descriptive term for a type of broadband plan in New Zealand. Naked broadband means just that, it is naked, it comes with nothing.... it really is just broadband.

Getting technical, naked broadband should really be called naked DSL (also known as standalone DSL or dry loop DSL). It is a digital subscriber line (DSL) which does not have an associated telephone line. So that means that the line has no PSTN (analogue telephony) service which basically means you don't have a dialling tone.

What is Naked Broadband?

Naked broadband is a standalone DSL internet service which is solely provided on the local loop.

With regular DSL there is a cable which runs from the telephone switch to a piece of equipment called a POTS - this is brilliantly named as a Plain Old Telephone Service splitter. This splitter in the telephone switch is used to separate out the DSL and the voice bands into two separate 'lines'. This means that when a customer at home can go ahead and pick up the phone they will have a dial tone - it is this dialling tone that confirms that they are able to use their telephone line as a regular landline whilst they are also "online" using the same line to access the internet on their computer or wireless device through a relevant router. The cable carrying both services runs from the POTS splitter to the cable head and this then heads on outside to the customer...

However, with naked broadband or naked DSL there is no cable from the telephone switch to the POTS splitter and because there is no split taking place there is no ability to make aa traditional call because there is no dial tone on the line. With modern technology, this, of course, is not a huge problem as a customer looking to make a traditional 'landline' telephone call can still use their naked broadband line for telephone conversations by utilising technology such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to make and receive phone calls through their naked broadband connection.

Naked broadband providers in New Zealand are becoming more common as more and more consumers are permanently ditching the concept of a landline and becoming reliant instead on their mobile phones or smartphones and other means of communication through data such as messaging platforms or VoIP services.

We have a large number of different naked broadband providers in New Zealand, the biggest and best of these are listed below in no particular order. Our only real word of warning is that if you are going to go naked be sure it suits your needs.
