Rural Broadband Options in NZ

Rural Broadband Options in NZ
Monday, 7 October 2024

Do you live in beautiful rural Aotearoa? With nothing but rolling hills, vibrant greenery, and perhaps sheer coastal cliffs. Wherever you are in rural New Zealand, you still need to be connected to the internet – to the rest of the world. While not every rural home has access to the fibre network, there are plenty of options to getting connected.

Let’s breakdown the different rural broadband options in New Zealand

Wireless Broadband (4G and 5G)

Wireless broadband use towers to beam the internet signal directly to your modem. This is a great option for those who live near mobile towers, and who wish for fast, smooth broadband. You will enjoy fewer buffering and interruptions. With developments in technology, 5G services are now available! They are super fast, and a great option for rural Kiwis!

Satellite

For those in especially remote locations around the country, satellite is a great option for you. It uses satellite technology to ping the internet signal to your modem. You will need a specialist to come set this up for you. But once ready to go, you will have access to reliable and speedy internet.

Copper

The copper network was the first type of broadband internet network in New Zealand. Made from, you guessed it, copper wires, it uses electricity to transmit data. However, fibre has largely surpassed copper networks, and if you can access fibre, we would recommend getting connected to enjoy the reliability and speeds that are noticeably better than copper. However, if you don’t have access, there are two options of copper lines – VDSL and ADSL. However, if you only have copper as an option, we would recommend signing up to VDSL
