Auckland & Call of Duty help break Broadband Traffic Record

Call of duty download breaks NZ Broadband Record
Monday, 17 August 2020

Traffic on Chorus’ network reached a new peak on Saturday night, breaking a previous record set in Lockdown earlier this year.

Network traffic peaked at 3.07Tbps, a 24 percent uplift on the previous Monday and surpassing a previous traffic peak of 3.03Tbps seen on the evening of 27 March.

This new traffic milestone coincides with Auckland being in Alert Level 3, the rest of the country in Alert Level 2, and a major update on a popular online game Call of Duty.

Earlier this year, Chorus announced that it had significantly upgraded network capacity in Auckland as part of a $50 million investment to ensure New Zealand’s networks could weather unexpected crises.

Chorus continues to invest in network capacity based on a forecast traffic growth of between 20 and 40 percent per year. This is pretty incredible growth – a throughput ceiling of 3.5Tbps was in place nearly a year in advance of the Rugby World Cup 2019, the network capacity now has significant headroom at about 4.5Tbps.
